The Cartoon Guide to Sex is a far ranging guide to human sexuality that is comprehensive, well-balanced and a lot of fun to read. For those of you unfamiliar with Larry Gonick, he's the writer and illustrator of the immensely popular Cartoon History of the Universe in part because he is able to impart an enormous amount of information with his conversational writing style and relaxed, simple drawing technique. As a result, the sexuality/educational content of this new book doesn't suffer from being presented by a cartoonist. In fact, we'd go so far as to say it's a step up over countless textbook style sex guides that bore the reader to tears. Cartoon Guide tackles such issues as date rape (Chapter 11: Uninvited Sex) and gender roles (Chapter 5: Who Vacuums?) in a clear and empowering manner. Rather than talk about these things in the abstract, topics are illustrated with cartoon role play that suggests ways of avoiding some of the negative aspects of human sexuality and enjoying the many positive aspects. Sex-positive, open-minded and humour-filled; this is a great book for teenagers and everyone older that wants to increase their knowledge and enjoy a good comic book. It is also an excellent book to leave lying around the house for teenagers who "don't need to listen to the adults in their life" but are still willing to read comics!
