The Art of Ann Swanson Gross

Ann grew up in Winlaw, BC, and studied fine arts at the Kootenay School of Art in Nelson. She taught art in Junior High School in the Queen Charlotte Islands -Haida Gwaii, then worked in the History Department of the Provincial Museum in Victoria. She also did freelance illustrations for other government ministries, including the children's line drawings for Museum train in the late 1970's. In adjudicating her work in the 1982 Award for Artistic Excellence in the Kootenay Boundary Jury show, Jack Shadbolt said of her work: "genuinely intriguing ... with a haunting tawniness."

Ann sculpts in clay and paints with fibre-tipped water based pens. Her clay pieces at Womyns'Ware have a child-like playfulness to the Ladies and their various postures. Beautifully executed, they'll make wonderful companions at home, always sure to make you smile. Ann's clay sculptures have found a home at Womyns'Ware due to a fortuitous sighting by one of the co-founders during a visit at the Kootenay Art Gallery. Her work so captured our imagination that we tracked her down to her studio in the woods, the Place in the Forest Studio & Gallery, to be precise.
