Ceramics by Melinda StraightMelinda is from North Van so she's very local which is cool. Classic kiln fired works, extremely accessible prices form $14 - 395. The metallic, flat and shiny ones are Raku-that means once they are taken out of the kiln and their glaze is still hot the piece is placed into a smoke pit of sorts and a lid is placed on top to seal the pit so that the smoke and the carbon reacts with the glaze to create a unique finish. The other pieces that appear more uniform are a classic ceramic kiln process! The ultra textured pieces are called lichen glazed or lizard. This finish is created much like a crackle finish is created on a furniture item where one glaze reacts with the other glaze and in effect tries to resist the other creating a lovely surface! The goddess figures can either be used as a hanging ornament, a ladle/spoon rest for the cook of the house, an incense trivet, a paper weight, an all-around lovely piece of work. The mirrors are all reclaimed and up-cycled reflective devices and the body parts are just plain breath-taking. Melinda Straight's website is Sculpture by Melinda. About our Gallery |
