Welcome to the tenth edition of Womyns’Ware Inc.’s Sex Toy Guide. We use the term “Guide” rather than “Catalogue” to indicate to the reader that these materials do more than simply present products available for purchase. We’ve created an educational tool as well as a shopping guide. We address how the products function in relation to how people’s bodies respond to erogenous contact, solo or with a partner. It’s the sexual objectives of our customers, our self-imposed product design and quality guidelines, and the anatomy of the human body that determines what products go into our guide. Womyns’Ware Inc. exists because of our belief that women’s sexuality should be celebrated and our desire to offer an environment, products, and services to empower women sexually. We welcome all who wish to share in this celebration, whether as individual women discovering their own sexual power or the sexual partners of women regardless of gender or sexual orientation. We hope that by experiencing our products, you may also buy into our sex positive philosophy.

We don’t accept the myth that sex is “dirty”. Instead, we say that sex is fun, good, and with a potential that is ever growing. We hope that this Guide imparts that truth and also provides you with an education. As with the consumption of other consumer goods, you can’t be expected to make an informed decision without product knowledge. This Guide arms you with that necessary information. Better still, the products inside have all passed our “Particularly Precise Purchasing Policy” thresholds for design, safety, quality, customer satisfaction, fair trade, and fit with our motto: celebration and empowerment of women’s sexuality.

Though our focus is on women, this does not exclude male partners or males as individuals. We believe that partners benefit when women are empowered sexually rather than sexualised. As we often say at Womyns’Ware Inc., our products are inanimate objects. They do not have a specific gender nor sexual orientation. Sex toys are not necessities of life, they are accessories and just as you do not rely solely on your body for transportation (even if you choose to walk to your destination, you’re likely to put on a pair of shoes), there is no good reason to rely solely on your body for sexual enjoyment. You don’t “need” any of our products but if you have a healthy sexual appetite and a desire to explore new sexual frontiers, you may want our products. Sex toys have the potential of expanding your sexual repertoire, igniting your sexual imagination and reviving your sexual practices but this can only come with knowledge, communication, and an examination of your needs and desires.

Hard to believe, but even after ten orgasmic years, we remain the only sex toy retailer to eliminate cheap electronics, rubber “jellies” and phthalate leaching soft vinyl products from our inventory. You’ll also not find any deceptive “lotions and potions” on our shelves nor trashy packaging where more money is invested in what is on the box than what goes in the box. Our industry is largely unregulated, perhaps due to the “taboo nature” of the subject matter. Whatever the underlying reasons, the lack of a government health watch-dog has meant that we’ve had to be self-regulating. We only sell products that meet our strict guidelines for appropriate design, safe materials, and suitability for the purpose. For example, late in 1998, Health Canada removed all soft vinyl children’s and pet chew toys from the market place. The EEC followed suit in 2001. These products contain chemicals such as lead and cadmium which are severely dangerous when absorbed. A German study of jelly rubber sex toys found extremely high concentrations of solvents and phthalate off-gassing. A recent U.S.A. study concluded that habitual use equates to chronic exposure. Clearly, if you can absorb these chemicals through the mouth, then you most certainly can through the vagina or rectum. Accordingly, Womyns’Ware Inc. will only sell silicone, hypoallergenic elastomer and food grade vinyl or latex (mentioned as safe alternatives by Health Canada) toys for penetration. As for cheap electronics, well, they just aren’t worth the price of their packaging. Even the Chinese press has run stories on the alarmingly poor quality of made in China sex toys. Good quality electronics, whether in stereos or vibrators, are worth the price for their design, quality of materials, function and reliable longer term, more efficient operation.

Our Guide creates an environment that mimics as closely as possible the one that you would find if you were able to visit us in our retail store. Some times we’re asked: “Why are there line drawings instead of photos?” We’ve found that the to-scale line drawings give people a better picture’ of the size differences between products, while photographs obscure details such as scale and pronounced ridges (i.e. the Echo dill) or texture (i.e. the Nouveau dill) so that people are better prepared with their line drawing view to assess crucial factors with penetrative products. The other problem we’ve experienced with photos is the colour resolution of each print run and hence expectation of colour of the actual product. This leads to disappointment when the colour doesn’t match the expectation. We’ve thus tried to strike a happy medium with to-scale line drawings as the standard because we believe with sex toys it IS the size that matters!

As you read through the Guide, you’ll see that each section starts with a general product tutorial, explains what exactly this or that sex toy is, divides toys into categories, and gives some guidance as to how you might introduce and incorporate the toy into your sex play. The sections then go on to present available products and related components, if applicable, with information to help you make a choice that suits you.

So, even though our products have to do with you being sexual and orgasmic, you’ll find that we treat their use in the same way as accessorizing any other consumer activity. One more thing before turning you loose on the goodies inside ... throughout this Guide you are going to find words that wouldn’t stand up to the test of a spell check. This is because everyday working language hasn’t allowed for the free exchange of sexual dialogue. To create an accessible language to speak about our products, we have had to create our own lexicon, including words such as “dill”, “vibe”, “lubes”, “vaginally”, “clitoral”, “penetratee”, and “penetrator”. We trust that you’ll get the gist of it as you go along so relax and enjoy reviewing our Sex Toy Guide.
